I Prefer a Carrot, Thanks!

Feb 18, 2017 | Performance Management

I always build group discussion into my training programs; it helps reinforce the messages and ensures we’ve delivered everything participants need. But I must say, there are many moments when I think to myself, “I couldn’t have said it better myself.”
I had one of those moments a few weeks ago when Beatrice, a finance manager, said: “I’d rather respect my manager than fear her.”
So many managers think just the opposite: Scared employees do what’s asked of them.
And they are right. For a while. Fear does motivate people. But it also prevents them from speaking their minds and giving valuable feedback. Working in an intimidating environment is exhausting, leading to unhealthy, unengaged employees. If you’ve got high turnover, a culture of fear might be why.
On the other hand, if employees respect their leaders and feel valued and appreciated, their productivity improves-as does job satisfaction and retention.
Bottom line: While being approachable and reasonable is nice-it’s also good for business!
And speaking of being good for business, what’s good for your business has been on my mind a lot lately, as I have revisited my blog strategy and recommitted to delivering usable, practical, entertaining content. So, expect me to show up in your inbox more often!
