Goals for Leaders and Other Smart People

Apr 23, 2024 | Leadership, Mindset, Performance Management

This past January I shared a series on reaching your goals. How are your goals going? Some of them maybe not so well? Well then, this message is for you!

For my own goals, I apply Carol Dweck‘s approach to learning and I don’t call my non-successes failures. I call them “not yet.” In 2023, I had many “not yets.” Those-non successes form the basis of what’s next for me! On the bright side, I did do my first scuba dive at the Great Barrier Reef because a woman I had never met before said, “If you don’t dive here here, at the Great Barrier Reef, I think we can all assume that you will die without ever diving!” So, diving is off of my bucket list of goals. What’s still on your list?

Here are 5 ideas for your “not yet” goals:

  • Channel why the goal is important to you. Make a vision board showing you completing your goal. Write down positive intentions.
  • Start now. Trying to build strength, lift a light weight today and tomorrow, add a half pound each week. As Nike would say, “Just do it” and feel free to do it in a small way, building up.
  • Notice what barriers got in your way. Trying to eat more meals at home? Make a plan. Were you going to start applying for jobs? Pick a time on your calendar and plan around it. Want to start saving? Make a plan. Notice when you tend to go adrift from your goal.
  • Find a buddy! I have an exercise buddy. Do you? It helps us both go out on cold wet days. Want to save money, lose weight, read more books, write more music? Find another person who is interested and be accountability partners.
  • Celebrate wins. Remember the blog about the baseball parks? My son and I didn’t achieve our goal within the time frame we had set, but we did ultimately achieve the goal.

If you would like to improve your productivity, your workplace culture, or your employees performance, let’s set up a consultation regarding goals and performance improvement. I look forward to hearing from you!
