Leaders Are Often Super Connectors

Jul 22, 2025 | Leadership, Performance Management

When you hear the word “networking,” do you cringe a little? You’re not alone. I have been writing about networking for the last few weeks. I realize that for many people, it brings to mind awkward small talk, pushy sales tactics, or those never-ending texts asking you to donate to something. It can feel transactional and impersonal. And for those of us who value authentic relationships, that kind of interaction just doesn’t sit well.

But that’s not what true networking is. At its best, networking is about generosity, curiosity, and connection. It’s about helping someone get where they want to go, even if there’s no immediate benefit to you. And some people are so good at it, so natural and thoughtful, that I call them super connectors.

A super connector is someone who loves to bring people together. They listen, they remember, and they are always thinking, “Who do I know that might be helpful here?” They do it because it feels good and they’re not keeping score.

They don’t expect a thank you card, although that’s always appreciated. They just genuinely want to help.

My friend Barbara from college is a great example. She introduced me to her colleague Missy, and because of that connection, I landed my dream job as Assistant Vice President of Employee Development. That opportunity changed the trajectory of my career.

Another example is Chris, one of my clients. He connected me with a friend who ran a professional association. That connection turned into a long and fulfilling relationship with the organization.

And sometimes, being a super connector is as simple as sharing a recommendation. My friend Martha knew I loved to knit and told me about a charming little shop she found.

What I have learned is that people are often delighted to help, especially when it comes to career paths and meaningful projects. When we approach others with generosity and genuine interest, we create space for real relationships to grow.

So, think about it, who are the super connectors in your life? And is it possible that you are one too?
