As a part of my coaching work, I am fortunate to work with employees at all levels of their organization. What I notice – time and time again – is that effective leaders consider all the variables, weigh the consequences, make decisions rather quickly, and then move on. When something goes awry, or is a flat-out disaster, they evaluate what went wrong, but they are able to quickly shift their thinking to the next decision.
Conversely, others take much longer to make decisions. They ask for input and then ask for it in another way, yet again. Decisions take longer for them to make, require more of their mental time and focus, and when the outcome is negative, they are slow to recover.
